I don't want a really long one.

I have had garter snakes and grass snakes (aka green snakes) as pets. The maximum size of either snake is only about 2 to 2-/12 feet long. I think garter snakes are pretty with their stripes.

My husband's roommate in colllege had boas and pythons, but these get quite large.

If you want a really small one then you could go with the ribbon snake. But if you don't mind a four foot one, i have a snake called a California Banana King Snake. She is very responsive and careful to not bite until she is sure that the thing in front of her is a mouse. She has never bitten me in her life time and is wonderful, and low maintains.

Ball Pythons are a good choice for a first snake. They are generally good tempered, will tolerate alot of handling, and don't grow to be very large. The females tend to grow a bit larger than the males, (you would to if you had to lay 8-10 eggs at a time!).They usually don't exceed a length a @ 5ft, and a weight of @5lbs. They are relatively inexpensive snakes, and they have beautiful markings.

Corn snakes can almost be called naturally tame and used to humans. They stay relatively small (usually don't grow more than 4-5ft) and stay thin. They don't move very fast unless provoked to, and can easily be handled at any time. Ball pythons are a little bigger but also very docile. Corn snakes run around $50, Python's $150, at least around here.

If your looking for a small snake you should get a green snake. I suggest geting a Baby ball python because there nice and not as big as an anaconda.

King snakes, corn snakes and milksnakes are all good choices. They stay fairly small...usually under 4 feet...they are usually quite docile and their care requirements are minimal. Look for those that are raised in captivity.

I love snakes too! Cornsnakes are good, so are garter snakes.
Avoid cottonmouths, rattlesnakes, and boa constrictors. :)
