Here is a good site that reviews several ipod download services:

I don't think any are free, but some only have a small 1-time fee and let you download music and videos.

i use itunes to load 'free' music onto my ipod. free is the term used to describe my purchased cds and load them onto my ipod. it is the safest and only legal way of loading 'free' music onto my ipod

many people use websites to download free music, only problem is, if you are not paying for it, these music files are shared files, which is a form of piracy. somewhat illegal. itunes offers a store in which to buy music at 99 cents a pop. walmart offers music at 88 cents a pop, but i have had problems with incomplete/not original songs. and if your computer crashes, you lose that song which sux cuz you already paid for it. yahoo music is a source, but you can't do anything with it but listen, can't burn, copy to a player, nothing.

i can understand artists wanting to be paid, but when there are all these restrictions for a buck, gimme a break.

there is no legal way to download popular music.. many people use Limewire, Bearshare, and BitTorrent to download music.. but it is NOT legal. But there isn't a real way to get caught either. Just stick with iTunes.
