First off Sophie... a seal is not a human. To compare them is to trivialize human life.
Secondly, newborn seals are not being killed. It's been illegal to kill baby seals, or whitecoats, since 1987. Not that that has stopped PETA, the Sea Shepherds and others of their ilk from using baby seals in their propoganda to influence the weak-minded.
Thirdly, Royal Commission on Seals and Sealing in Canada found that clubbing seals, when done properly, is more humane than the killing processes in commercial slaughterhouses.
Fourthly, a 2002 report published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal found that the club or hakapik is an efficient tool designed to kill the animal quickly and humanely.
Fifthly, sealers in the Magdalen Islands (Gulf of St. Lawrence) and on Quebec's Lower North Shore, where about 25% of the hunt occurs, use both rifles and hakapiks while sealers on the ice floes on the Front (in the waters east of Newfoundland), where 75% of the hunt occurs, primarily use rifles.
The seal hunt is a humane, sustainable and economically viable use of a natural resource.

It's ridiculous and should be outlawed. There is no reason a living creature should ever be brutalized. First, there's no reason seals should be killed at all for commercial purposes, and secondly...even if it were a necessity, we're supposed to be the most advanced group of living beings on the planet. Surely we could (and should) find a more humane way. In my opinion, we're too brutal to the animals we regularly use for food and clothing as it is. The people who carry out these deeds without any remorse, really scare me. Where's the humanity?

Ok Merk
Here is my opinion, as far as its fast and painless death bull **** I have seen this act being done, the poor animals sometimes linger for hours before they die, anyone who tries to tell you anything different are bull shitting, and also if that was your child lying next to you and someone came along and clubbed it to death how would those people feel & think? its a well know fact that animals have feelings towards there young, just as much as us so called humans.
I'm sorry but I find this barbaric and unacceptable, if we need to cull anything because there are to many then I think we need to also start on the human race.

It's cruel. Plus humans have the unfair advantage of having legs and arms. To make it at least somewhat fair, if that's even right, I think hunters should have to tape their legs together, lie on their bellies, and flop on down to the seals to try to get their kill on. At least give the poor things a chance.

Wrong, very very wrong. Those people should have been clubbed to see how the seals felt when they were beaten. But thats my personal opinion, I feel PETA would feel the same way (Well except for beating the people, maybe they would throw paint at them..)

wtc thats horrible thats just like killing a newborn baby jus b/c it can`t talk.Humans have a bad way of taking advantage of their arms and legs, or sometimes they think that just b/c they cant talk or just b/c we can`t understand them they`re not important they aren`t impotant or shouldn`t be alive i think it`s cruel and evil to treat any animal wrong...again it`s just as bad as killing a newborn baby

I think that it is a terrible way to kill any animal. They have feelings like us and i`m sure they want to live just as much as we do.
