The cause of his death is undetermined and has been attributed to alcohol, drugs, cholera, rabies, suicide (although likely to be mistaken with his suicide attempt in the previous year), tuberculosis, and other agents.
In an analysis almost 147 years after his death, doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center believe that writer Edgar Allan Poe may have died as a result of rabies, not from complications of alcoholism. Poe's medical case was reviewed by R. Michael Benitez, M.D., a cardiologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center. His review is published in the September 1996 issue of Maryland Medical Journal.

Historical accounts of his hospitalization indicate that at first he was delirious with tremors and hallucinations, then he slipped into a coma. He emerged from the coma, was calm and lucid, but then lapsed again into a delirious state, became combative, and required restraint. He died on his fourth day in the hospital. According to an account published in the Maryland Historical Magazine in December 1978, the Baltimore Commissioner of Health, Dr. J.F.C. Handel certified that the cause of Poe's death was "congestion of the brain."

Poe was an alcoholic, but just before he died, he had given up drink and was headed north to reestablish a romance he once had with a woman earlier in his life. What actually cause his death is still a mystery. He had stopped off in Baltimore where they were having an election and was found dead in the gutter of a street. Apparently he had been beaten quite badly, but he did not die of alcoholism.

In 1836, Poe married his 13 year old cousin, Virginia, in Richmond. Poe was devoted to his wife. When she finally died a tragic death from consumption in 1847, Poe outlived her by only two years. The cause of his death remains a mystery. Despite many theories surrounding his death, no exact cause has ever been proven. He rests with his wife and aunt under the monument erected to him in Westminster Graveyard in downtown Baltimore.
Emphasis the part that says "the cause of his death still remains a mystery"

I've heard that he WAS indeed an alcoholic, but did not die from alchy. I heard he commited suicide.
And to the first guy who answered---he was not a bum, he was brilliant. The most brilliant are the most misunderstood. dumb***.
Anyway, whether or not Poe did die of alcoholism, i don't think you will have much luck finding evidence. But best of luck.

I know that he died of Alcoholism, and was a bum, didn't make much money at all off of his poems. Do the research yourself. This isn't yahoo homework.
