My Spanish class is required to learn how to Salsa dance, and I was just wondering, is it really that hard? I mean, the only dance lessons I've ever taken were ballet when I was in Elementary school. Any tips?

I'm an American living in Central America. What I've noticed about locals who like to dance--and they all do--is the innate rhythm in their hips, men and women. Americans have a lot of arm and leg action, but don't log on to the hip thing so well.
The dances and music are sensuous and beautiful.

Salsa dancing isn't as easy as some people think to learn when you get into the advanced stuff, but it is by no means impossible. A good natural rhythm helps with any dance, and it's always a good thing to enjoy the music your dancing to. This factor is often overlooked, but do some research, watch some clips, and determine what type of salsa you would like to learn the most. (Yes, there are types.) The two basic ones are on1 and on2. I myself prefer New York on2 (mambo), but you might not. It might take some work, but you should be able to learn it.

For your purposes, you'll only need to learn some basic steps, and they're really easy. Good technique is a bit tougher, and as a ballroom dancer used to seeing mambo done with good technique, I find it somewhat distracting to see otherwise fairly advanced salsa dancers with ugly leg and hip motion and sloppy footwork. But you won't be required to be good, just to have a basic competence, and that's very easy, one of the easiest dances to begin.

it depends wad kinda person u are. if u are extrovert and open to new ideas, u are half way there. salsa is a social dance, thus it would be easier if u are able to open up and take it easy.

be relax. dancing is like walking.... salsa is just like walking in a pattern or routine. just that simple!!!
