I am a sketch artist and photographer that frequently books hotels to do a days worth of shooting and work.

While visiting a local hotel, I was approached by a hotel manager who told me that the hotel had workers fixing wires in the ceiling above my room and spied on me working!!!

If that wasn't embarassing enough, the hotel manager took this highly invasive information and asked me to leave!

How should I procede with this?

Complain that people were looking at you when you had a reasonable expectation of privacy...

Doesn't sound like any laws were broken, nor did the hotel commit any of the more obvious torts.

Unless there is some specific case precedent in your state that would apply, the best you can do is ask for your money back for the day/night you were asked to leave, and any pre-payments for later nights.

Laws vary by state, and there may be other statutes or caselaw that would apply. Whenever your legal rights are at issue, consult with an attorney licensed in your state.

If it was a chain, I'd bring this straight to the corporate office - I'm guessing that they would side with you and offer you incentives to keep your mouth shut.

Regardless of what state you were in, it's safe to assume that state laws would afford you some level of protection of your privacy in a hotel room - you'd need to consult an attorney for the specifics, but it's definitely worth looking into - by telling you that they saw you, it's pretty much an admission of guilt on the part of the hotel manager. Good luck - I'm rooting for you!

I am not an attorney, so can not provide legal advice, however you might consider that your right of privacy was invaded, and as it appears that you were unable to complete your stay in the hotel, you might have cause for an action in small claims court to recover your expenses. However if it was presumed that your work was in violation of local or state statues, then you many not have a case, and can be thankful you weren't reported to the authorities. I don't know that you would be able to recover punitive damages, for this you may need to consult with an attorney. Good Luck.

You may wish to contact a lawyer in your area. You may have a cause of action for invasion of privacy. The question you have to ask is, do you really want to expose yourself to the conditions of a lawsuit? If you do so, whatever you were doing will certainly be brought out into public view.

Perhaps it would be better to simply remember to not stay at that hotel again.

Good luck!

I'm guessing you were shooting adult porn or some such. I can't think why else this would be embarrassing. In any case, they weren't intentionally spying on you - they saw you by accident; and they are entitled to report what they saw to the manager, who is in turn entitled to ask you to leave for any or no reason. However, he should have refunded anything you pre-paid for the room.
