how good are bristle nose plecos at eating algae? I'm thinking about getting one... my snail died recently and I don't want another snail because I'll feel like I'm replacing her. but, I need whatever i eat to actually eat the algae because since my snail died I've been getting more and more algae. pete was very good at controlling algae.

my unlce had one and said it was pretty good at controlling algae, but I've heard that they don't actually do much for algae control, so I was just hoping for some opinions.

for those of you who don't know, i know quite a bit about fish and caring for them, so I don't need instructions or anything like that. just your personal experience with bristle nose plecos. thanks.

I kept and bred bristle nose some time back and to sum it up I found them to be quite good at algae control as long as I didn't target feed them too often. When I was conditioning for spawning and target feeding various veggies they basically ignore the algae, so I would assume it's a hungry bristle nose that will do a good job of algae control.

MM

ROFL on the eat / get... I was wondering how hungry you are as you wrte this.

Kylie, I keep and spawn both the albino and regular brown bristle nosed plecos. I have populated most of my tanks with them and have no problems with algae at all. Some tanks have only one plec and others have up to 9.

Counting the fry in one of my breeding tanks, I guess I have about 75-85 total. Approximately 20 are adults. I supplement their diets with algae wafers, spirulina pellets, spirulina flakes and boiled zucchini.

They are a busy bunch when not being fed and seldom do much hiding like the standard plecos do when they get large.

I am a big fan of BN plecos and highly reccommend them to everyone for algae control.

I've got 3 of them (2 albinos) They seem happy and content in the tanks I have them in, and neither on the tanks have any algae problems.

I can't comment on how they do if you feed them extra. Mine just get the algae and the stuff the other fish don't eat.

they are really good at getting algae but unless you feed them with algae wafers they won't eat the algae very well. They're cool.

I agree with magicman! If you are not having to supplement their diet and they have plenty to eat, they do a good job. I have albinos and I love them. They do great and are just so darn cute..ok...as far as plecos go...lol...:-) I DO offer them other foods though, I believe variety is healthier, but they still keep my algae under control.

I have found they do better than the Chinese algae eaters---and they have a charm all their own-----so gregarious.
I like them because they grow slowly and live a long time.
