I think you should get a TracPhone. Your minutes are reloadable and not billed every month. That means you can't run the bill up on your parents phone and have them get angry with you. Also, the text messaging is cheaper on my daughter's TracPhone than on my regular cell phone. It also has downloadable ring tones and games. Have fun!

An 11 Y-O doesn't need a cell phone, unless she is out on the town often. As long as she rides w/ mommy, she shouldn't need a phone. I didn't get my first one until I was 15, and I bought it myself. You should make her pay for it, so she can learn the value of a dollar. That's the problem with our society, kids have everything done for them, and when it comes time for the real world, they're not ready

Do not get into an expensive contract -- buy a prepaid phone with a set # of minutes per month. All of the cell carriers offer these but do not advertise them b/c they want to get people on the more expensive plans / contracts.

There is one out on the market that only allows 5 phone numbers so you can control whom she calls, ie. parents, grandparent, couple friends. It limits the cost and lets her earn the privilege of a regular phone.
