It means that between 40-60% of the population who are eligible to vote actually do. That means that 60-40% don't vote - so roughly 1/2 of the people who can vote are make the decisions in this country. In a country designed to run by the people, for the people, that is a problem.

Unfortunately there are those in power who are happy with this, as it is how they got into power, and so they are unlikely to do anything about it. I have heard public officials say "we have enough voters, I am not worried about that." With these numbers you get a government that does not reflect the sentiment you hear in the street and it appears to be a corrupt system - which loses more voters because they feel they are wasting their time.

The only civic duty America asks of it's citizens is to take the time to voice their opinion official on community issues and leaders, help out with jury duty every so often and to help fund with taxes the system and services that we have come to depend upon. Government for the people, by the people, must have ALL the people involved.

Peace!

At least half of those eligible to don't even register, and of those that register, only about half bother to vote. That means only 25% of those eligible to, actually vote. This is mostly related to apathy, disillusionment with politics and/or politicians in general, or the refusal to vote the lesser of two evils in most races. The dirty political ads have a lot to do with it because people are tired of all the negativity by the time election day finally gets here.

Only a little over 50 percent of the eligible voting age citizens vote in elections. So, only a little over half of the citizens determine the course that the government takes.

My philosophy is: "If you don't vote, don't get upset when government does something you don't like."

There are many people in the US who do not vote, I for one am one of them. To me it doesnt matter who is in office, because what they promise turns into lies. It all comes down to how much money they can make while they are there. So whoever gets in office, gets in, have fun doing what yo do, here is more tax dollars for things we have no control of regardless if we voted or not.

It means that half the eligible voters don't even bother to go to the polls; thus, elected officials may or may not be representing the will of all the people.

it means we have a crisis of leadership.

our leaders are so dull and uninspiring that they have lulled the population (except for the lunatic fringes) into simply not caring.

it's actually much easier for leaders who pander only to special interests to have most people not vote, as is the case in the usa...

Nobody votes anymore. When it's time for election, everyone just sits around watching the clouds go by.

It doesn't mean anything because those American who don't vote are dumber than a sack of hammers anyway and they don't count! Soon they will be our lobotomized robots..and that's the way it should be!
