midget - "little person"
black - "african american"

etc... do you feel we are becoming too overly sensitive?

As an american, I believe that there are American citizens and immigrents. Color, religon, physical attributes should not mean anything. Accept all people as they are. Who are you to judge! I agree that things are getting out of hand.

I can remember when in the 1970's the blacks were adament about being called "black" because it was the opposite of white. When they started the "African American" crap, I just blew it off. It's not even remotely correct. Some young girl at a department store got really upset because an elderly woman referred to her as "Black". Like it was derrogratory. Don't they know that they were captured by othr tribes (who were black) and used as slaves. That's where slavery really began, right in there own country. Then they were sold to the white man. I've known Africans who had to win a lottery to get out of the country and when they came over here, they didn't want to be associated with the blacks from this country because they're such hoodlums. The true African Americans are afraid of the blacks over here.

Language shapes thought. So, sometimes the PC terms are really helpful to help us change the way we think. At first, using a new word takes thought, so it's uncomfortable, but once we get used to it, I think it helps us to see people in a more equitable light. I remember when I was 6 or 7 and had to learn to say "*****" instead of "colored." It was an improvement for most of my neighborhood, especially some of the older white folks who tossed around the n-word way too easily. Learning to say "women" instead of "girls" when referring to adult females was a good change, too.

Do I like all the PC terms? No. But I remember some of the ones I've learned to use in the past, and that usually encourages me to at least try the new ones.

Yes I agree with you completely. I think we are too sensitive as a whole! I try to be unpolitically correct as much as possible. Not that I would use racist terms or anything like that but I'm not afraid to call someone black or white, midget, etc. Political correctness just goes way too far sometimes in my opinion.

I am hearing challenged instead of hearing impaired...
I am health challenged instead of terminally ill

I am both so why not say it the way it really is?
