Hi. Modem means 'modulator/demodulator'. It takes incoming data (sounds in the case of a phone modem) and modulates them into a form of binary that the PC can interpret. Some of the standards are listed here: http://www.pcmech.com/show/modems/113/

MOD-DEM i.e MODULATOR AND DEMODULATOR
THIS MEANS YOUR LOCAL MODEM IS CONNECTED TO A PHONE LINE WHICH CONVERTS DIGITAL SIGNALS FROM YOUR COMPUTER AND THEN MODULATES THEM INTO ANALOG SIGNALS OVER THE TELEPHONE LINE .
THE MODEM ON THE OTHER SIDE DEMODULATES THE ANALOG SIGNAL AND CONVERTS IT INTO BINARY SIGNALS OR DIGITAL SIGNALS A COMPUTER CAN UNDERSTAND.CLS(CLEAR TO SEND) AND RTS(READY TO SEND) ARE THE TWO IMPORTANT SIGNALS FOR TRANSMISSION AND RECEPTION
