It could have trans fluid but not the correct amount the only way to check it would be to turn the car on, let it get to normal operating temp then pull the e-brake and put it in drive. Pop the hood then check the dipstick. This allows all the valves to open up. When was the last time you had a fluid change???You might just have a dirty tranny filter or if they recently did it then you might have incorrect tranny fluid in there. Make sure you're using dealer specific fluid. (ex: dodge uses ATF+4)

If the fluid isn't low, you might really be in neutral. If the indicator doesn't line up with the letters too well or you feel some looseness in the shifter, you might just need to fix or adjust the shift linkage.
The fluid needs to be pretty close to dead on in some transmissions. If it's older than Moses, try a flush. New fluid might clean up the mechanism enough to bring it back.

I answered this question when you posted it in the music part. But I would take it in somewhere to have a mechanic look at it. I think that it could be the torque converter and it requires a temporary fix by simply unplugging it and not allowing it to do its job. To learn more about what the function of the torque converter is go to:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque_converter
I would just take it into a mechanic and see what they have to say though.

You could have dirty trans fluid causing a problem or it could be the drive clutch pack is going out.

sounds like your trans. sensor is no good... you can't really do anything on your own... bring it in..... i had that problem with my previous car also... one thing you can try is to make sure you have it in Drive... sometimes the display say it's in Drive but it's not yet there...

I would have the fluid and filter changed, if this dosent help then you will need a transmission.
