William Shakespeare: April 23, 1564 (although this has never been confirmed)-April 23, 1616. He was baptized April 26, 1564, leading the world to believe that he was born on April 23, 1564. He leaves behind a wife, Anne Hathaway, whom he married in 1582, a daughter Susannah, who was born in 1583, and Judith, born in 1585. Judith had a twin brother, Hamnet, who preceded his father in death in 1596.
Shakespeare handled high drama, romance and slapstick comedy with equal ease, and his most famous quotes include, "To be or not to be" and "Parting is such sweet sorrow". Shakespeare is also known as "the Bard of Avon," in a reference to his birthplace, and many of his plays were originally performed in the famous Globe Theater in London.
Among his best-known plays are Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and MacBeth, along with A Midsummer Night's Dream. He is also known for his poetry, especially his sonnets.
