can a pirate copy of window xp be used to re install my laptop due to avin a new hard drive fitted

never use a copy. You cant update it through the internet. So it will very rapidly go out of date and you'll end up with half the progs not running properly.
plus the fact that if your found with it your in deep trouble.

If you look on the bottom of your laptop there should be a Windows product key sticker with the right key for your laptop!
You can use any copy of XP on CD to reboot your laptop but you may find you have to go to your laptops manufacturers website to download certain drivers to make it work properly!

Of course, a pirated version of any OS could be installed. I have a friend with an HP laptop who has a pirated version of Mac OS X.

Hi. Off-line? Yes, but you will not have access to the latest security and other patches. If the original WinXP was legit then a call to the Activation center at MS may get you legal again.

actually the pirate thing isn't recognized by the disc you use, the problem its with the cd key if it have been used lots of times microsoft recognizes that OS as a pirate one

Correction to the secound guy that answered. The windows XP updates... simply... make your computer worse.

i would think so but your question is awfully vague. I dont see why it wouldnt work but you will have to format your hardrive thereby losing your data unless you back it up...
