Why is it that the some of most emotionally unstable people sometimes go on to be the most successful?

Because mentality wise, they are freaking genius! Truly. Most real geniuses do not know how to handle the real world and real people. They see average people as idiotic, or lesser than them. They are so smart, they sometimes have very little coping skills. My brother-in-law is like this. He has a PhD from Harvard, and is trained to be a cardio thoracic surgeon, who decided not to pursue that career after he earned his degree! He has since went on to work for the U.S. government and helped to produce a medical life-saving device used by soldiers in Iraq, and he teaches at a private military school! Freaking genius he is, but truly emotionally unstable a good majority of the time!

I believe that: Through counseling, medicine, and therapy many emotionally unstable people learn how to handle stress in their daily lives better then the average person. Since being successful comes with a lot of stress, these people often know how to handle stressful situations and can be more successful then the average person.

I will say the socially unstable, meaning the people, who can't or don't want to suppress their emotions for the society and choose a path different from the socially accepted. So, you can choose two paths different from the ordinary (socially accepted) one. A path that can lead you to destruction or another path that can lead you to success.

maybe the constant accusement of being so unstable gives them a boost to prove everyone wrong.

Because they are probably very intelligent. More intelligent than their parents, teachers & later therapists. Ironically, also a lot of pyschopaths are very intelligent......Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahlmer........

Because they are highly intelligent. Intelligence does not necessarily mean you have common sense or are stable.
