My husband and I plan to strip and refinish our hardwood floors. I brought a book at home depot which tells us how to do it, but it sounds hard. I don't want to start and it be to big aof a job for us.

You can do it.
Follow the book step-by-step, carefully.
It doesn't matter if it takes longer. It's better than paying some chump way too much to pay you what you can do yourself.
Do you pay someone to chew your food if it's too crunchy?

Home depot will also rent you a floor sander, just be careful not to gouge the floors you can also use a portable sander to get next to the walls. It's a dusty job, so make sure you have a face mask for the dust. Once the floors are sanded and level then use a good poly urethane varnish. I prefer a marine grade varnish.

Go rent a floor sander. They are like a floor buffer but you put a sheet of sand paper under it instead of a pad. Just be careful of how much wood your taking off. Belt sanders do work but you need to be VERY careful not to sand a hole in your wood.

For finishing the sanding where the floor sander can't get, use a palm sander.

The finish coat I used on my last floor I did was clear gloss polyurethane. Because it's very durable and doesn't chip easily...go figure the coat airplanes with it.

If I were you I would pay someone to remove the old finish and sand. I've used the rented floor sanders and although they are easy to use it's still easy to gouge your floors. If you hire someone to get you to bare wood, then stain and poly yourself. You'd still be saving a lot of money and protecting your investment. Sometimes I think we do-it-yourselves don't know when to draw the line, and consult pros. It'd save us a lot of work and a lot of disappointment.
