Some pennies are really valuable. The rarest, with only four known to exist today, were minted in 1793. They're worth an estimated $275, 000 each. You're probably more likely to come across a 1943 penny in grandpa's money jar. If it is a real copper penny, you'll be holding a cool $80,000.
Eighty thousand bucks for a 1943 penny? What gives? You see, 1943 was a special year in that the U.S. was running short of copper for the war effort and minted pennies out of steel for that year only. But, while they were switching over the equipment at the mint, about 40 or so pennies were struck on copper blanks that had been left in the hoppers of the machines. So, if you find a 1943 copper penny, go ahead and yell "jackpot!" But before you count your riches, better see if that penny will stick to a refrigerator magnet. Real copper won't but a fake copper plated steel one will.

I don't think there are any worth a million, but
I can give you the rare dates. You can find
their current values in a magazine called
COIN PRICES. Of course, the value of
any coin depends on its condition.
A penny in mint state is certainly worth
more than one that's quite worn.
VALUABLE DATES:
Large cents(1793-1857)
1793-strawberry leaf variety. Only 4
are known to exist and each is worth
over $200000.
1799 and 1804 are also very valuable.
Flying eagle cents(1856-1858)
1856 is quite rare, being a pattern coin,
not struck for general circulation.
Indian head cents(1859-1909)
Most dates in the late 1860's and 1870's
are scarce. 1877 is rare. 1909 with an
S on the reverse is quite scarce.
Lincoln cents(1909-present).
The most valuable regular issues are
1909 S with the initials VDB at
the bottom of the reverse and 1914
with a D under the date.
There is a rare mint error. In 1922
all cents were struck in Denver but
due to a die error a few came out
with no D under the date. So
1922 "no D" with a strong reverse
is quite valuable.
1909S and 1931S are scarce.
In 1943 the mint struck zinc coated
steel cents to conserve copper for
the war effort. The copper pennies
were again minted in 1944.
HOWEVER, a few bronze cents were
struck in 1943 and a few steel cents
in 1944. These are quite rare.
On some of the 1955 cents
from Philadelphia the front has a doubled
date. One of these sells for more than $1000
in fine condition or better.
Finally, there is a very rare Canadian penny
from 1936 with a dot under the date. Only
3 are known to exist and one recently
sold for over $600000!
