1. Plead Not Guilty.
2. Go back to the intersection with a stop watch or camera of some sort and video tape the light changing colors. You need to somehow show the passage of time on the video to prove you didn't alter the speed.
3. Measure the distance across the intersection.
4. Determine the speed limit.

Do some calculations to figure out if it's possible to actually enter the intersection just a fraction of a second before it turns yellow and get to the other side before it turns red at the maximum speed limit.

In some cases, the yellow light is illegally too short. If that's the case with you, then you have a good argument. You also would have a good argument if there is no yellow light and it just goes from green to red.

Fight it. Go to court and hope the policemen who issued the ticket doesn't show. If he/she does, then it is your word against his/her unless of course it was recorded. I was ticketed twice on the NJ Turnpike while still in college a few years back. I went to court on both occasions, the officer(s) never showed and the matters were dismissed. (I didn't run a red light. I was under and past it for at least four seconds before it turned red. on one occasion, and on the other, the light was clearly green. The second officers said he stopped me for not wearing a seatbelt, but realizing his mistake said to me" "Well I've got to give you a ticket for something.-- that is, unless you want to go for coffee after I get off."
I told him I'd prefer the ticket even if it meant I had to go to court. I did. He didn't. The matter was dismissed.

Sounds like the lights were changing, & what you consider to be green was actually amber. Re-read your road rules first, then embark on an expensive course of your word against that of a police officer. It'll be easier to adjust your driving habits & just pay the ticket..... or get a law degree.

You will have to go to court and plea not guilty. If you had a passenger in the car ask them if they can go as your witness. However, do not ignore the ticket, if you get stopped again the penalty will be worse because you will have an outstanding ticket on your record.

I would fight the ticket in court. Try the site below for research on this topic. Make sure to change the location/state in which you got the ticket.

Plead not guilty if you feel that you were wronged.
