hp has been having this issue with vista / and cd /dvd drives

the fix is rather easy

+++then look for this key

Vista has problems like this designed right into it. If the operating system decides that a piece of your hardware is a security risk for digital rights infringement, it will disable that hardware, and this can happen at any time. I'm not saying for sure that this is what happened to you, but you DID rip music with it.

Is the drive removable? If so, you might try rebooting the system with the drive removed, then rebooting again with the drive reinstalled, to see if the OS will re-enable it.

Or you could wipe that Vista excrescence off your hard drive and install Linux instead, which is what I'd do in your shoes.

Go to Start, then Run, and type diskmgmt.msc in the box and click OK. Check to see if the drive is listed there but does not have a letter assigned. If that is the case, assign it a drive letter.

You probably installed software that blocked it. Try doing a system restore and see what happens. This happened to me.
