You don't really need to any software to use your own Pics as a wall paper.

(This applies in Windows, I don't have a clue about Linux or any other OS Desktops)
Right click on your desk top.
Select the "Desktop" tab.

In the Back ground window is a list of files that windows already knows it can use for wall papers.

Click on the browse button,
Go to the location of your Pics and select the one you want.

In the positon box you can select Center, Tile or strech.

You see the preview right there. You can also personalize your background color here.

While we are here, if you want to use a web page as a background
click on "Customize Desktop"
Click the "Web" tab
Click New
and this will bring up a wizard. You can either past copy and paste the URL in the space provided, Visit MS's gallery, or put a picture or Html page.

Now, and even easier way to set a picture as a wall paper is right from the Explorer window.

Go to the location of your image, right click on it and select "Set as Desktop Background".

I told you the harder way first, so you would know where to go to "Center, Stretch or Tile"

Now, for working with your own Pics and even working with Graphics, I recommend Corels Paint Shop Pro. An excellent, powerful, and affordable, image editing program.

There is an open Source program I've heard of but never tried called Gimp. I think it works with Windows and Linux.

Take care,

You probably have everything you need right on your computer. Wallpapers are just *.bmp files. Most any photo or pic editors will convert jpegs, jpg, png, art... to any other pic format including bmp. Go to control panel >>display>>wallpaper and use it to find and apply any bmp file. Use your pic editor to re-size it to the same size as your desktop for best results. There are millions of wallpapers online, but I've never seen a site where you can create your own.

if you have already got the photo you wish to make use of as your wallpaper for your computer, it is useful - (on Windows) click on Start, open the Control Panel decide upon Display click on Browse and choose the photo you wish to make use of as wallpaper and click on good enough. That will have to do it. Goodluck!
