my friend is doing a demo class teaching a bunch of first graders chinese for the very first time. The class is about 30 minutes long, what could she do to make the class interesting and lively? (under the restricted time) Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds fun, kudos to your friend!!!

I'm not a teacher, but I did grow up as an American in Asia...

I would suggest looking at websites first of all for research e.g. Amazon and a website called ChinaSprout that has resources on teaching Asian languages to children (www.chinasprout.com).

Another thing to do is to dress up as someone Chinese and teach the kids about the food and culture - bring in something Chinese to show them. Or, take them on a "trip" and pretend to take them on an airplane or to Chinatown or out to eat at a Chinese restaurant and teach them a few basic phrases in Chinese. Use plenty of visuals, pictures and objects, and the more the kids can act things out, the better.

The song idea is great, too, for the poster who suggested that.

Wow! That's not easy! Make the words very simple like the words they are used to learning like counting, hello, good-bye, where's the bathroom--the most important sentence to learn in any language when traveling!lol Perhaps your friend could teach them a very simple song that has movements along with the words to help them remember better. (Imagine what their parents will think when they get home and can sing a song in Chinese!) Perhaps she can teach them how to order from a Chinese menu?

I taught China to 6th graders, but I didn't know anything but how to say "hello." We did some character writing that they thought was very cool. Good luck to your friend!

She could bring toys or puppets of some sort, make a game with the learning give them candy for rewards or even make a slide show or PowerPoint or bring pictures of pictures from china.
