"Hands on" what? Your fellow employees? Bad idea.
If you mean that managers should be involved enough in the work of their employees to know what's going on, that's usually a good idea. However, companies also expect most managers, especially senior-level execs, to take a more strategic view and spend less time getting involved in tactical issues.
