Who sent you the ticket, the rental company? If the police that they were given the address by the car rental company. Most non nationals ignore these tickets especially if they are never going back to the country in question, you could also try denying that it is a car that you have driven as the ticket is wrongly made out. In law any fault in the ticket can be used to deny that the correct vehicle has been ticketed.

Way one: just pay the penalty
Way two: get yourself in to something you are not sure about. You can mention that model of the car is not what you had. Send a copy of the proof. You will have a delay (long delay I suspect) while they will check that one out. It may during that time they decide that it's not worth it to continue any investigation. Postage will eat all profit. Good Luck

As you have described the situation, they have given a ticket to a car, with the same registration as one you rented, but have marked on the ticket that it was a different model of car to the one you rented.
I realise that it was in Italy, so the same may not apply, but if this had occurred in the UK the ticket would not be valid.

That's a good one.
Where I live it would cost more than 80 just to open the lawyers front door.
But in this case YOU can not prove that you were not driving a Fiat on that day, can you?
