The hymen is a think strip of skin located in the vagina. It used to be used to determine a woman's virginity, however, it has come to light that it can break without having intercourse. When it does break, some women experience some bleeding, maybe a little pain, but that's about it.

The hymen (name for the Greek God of marriage and weddings, Hymenaeus, lateralso the Greek word for membrane; also called maidenhead) is a fold of mucous membrane which surrounds or partially covers the external vaginal opening. It forms part of the vulva, or external genitalia. [Some girls are born without a hymen. The most common formation of the hymen is crescentic or crescent-shaped, although several other formations are possible. A woman's hymen is destroyed when she gives birth; she may be left with remnants called carunculae mytriformes or the hymen may be completely absent.

The hymen has no known anatomical function. In societies which value chastity, the greatest significance of the hymen is a traditional belief that an intact hymen indicates a state of intact virginity. However, it is not possible to confirm that a woman or post-pubescent girl is a virgin by examining the hymen.A physician routinely checks the appearance of the hymen of baby girls at birth[citation needed], and again during all future pelvic examinations[citation needed]. In cases of suspected rape or sexual abuse a detailed examination of the hymen may be carried out, however the condition of the hymen alone is often inconclusive or open to misinterpretation, especially if the patient has reached puberty.

Last time I had anything to do with one, it had nothing to do with a cervix.. because the cervix is located roughly about 4 inches inside her vagina. I am going to use analogies that men can understand so please pardon.

The hymen is a thin piece of skin that usually partly protects the vagina (a bit like a front door does on your house) just behind the labia minora (those cute little flaps you see - a bit like the shutters on the windows of your house lol).

For some the hymen almost completely covers the vagina entrance.... (a bit like a solid core door that is partly open but hooked to a chain lock)... making penetration very difficult and quite painful with a fair bit of bleeding... (like when you bust through that door from the outside)

For some the hymen is almost non existent - (like an open flyscreen door) - making penetration quite painless and therefore causes little or no bleeding.

Obviously there are all the individual variations on this theme.

When the hymen breaks... it actually tears (a little like a piece of tissue paper) and that tearing is the cause of a little bleeding. It is obviously initially a bit uncomfortable the first time. And fragments of the hymen can remain for the second and consequetive times. Needless to say that natural child birth gets rid of all but microscopic evidence that it was ever there to begin with.

I had a girlfriend once whose hymen was so closed that penetration wasn't possible. She couldn't use a tampon and eventually she had her hymen surgically removed.

I have another friend who said lost hers when she slipped over on a storage box at girl guides.... she said that was quite painful and she always joked about losing her virginity at girl guides... although that much of it was a joke.

Its just a thin layer of skin inside the vagina. When a woman has sex for the first time, this is torn....alittle bleeding can occur. It also can be alittle painful just because it's the first time the woman is having sex,but nothing that's too bad.

Please remember that tearing of the Hymen can happen before woman have sex for the first time by several things...So just because the Hymen isn't intact, doesn't mean she's already been devirgintized.hehe

Nothing strange happens...Her head won't start turning around and around while spewing pea green soup everywhere.hehe!:)

Hope this helps.

It is a very thin membrane which covers the cervix and usually breaks with first intercourse, or a gynecologist can do it in his/her office. There is a little blood and some soreness which goes away.

hehehe.
my boyfriend asked what the placenta was one day.

you boys are so cute with your questions

It's the cherry. when it beaks, a lot of blood comes out,

A huge myth is you know a girl isn't a virgin if she doesn't bleed, becasue the p*nis is suposed to pop the hymen, BUT it is a VERY thin layer of skin closing off the cervicle ( i think)
so when a girl hits puberty, and get's her first period, the Hymen breaks.
