In a fertile environment, with fertile quality cervical fluids, semen can survive for as long as 5 days. That is on the long side, and obviously not all semen survives for that long, but it's possible. (Well that figure is according to the fertility doctors I've spoken with; I hadn't seen that article quoted above. I don't know that I buy it, but better safe than sorry.)

IF fertilization occurs, the embryo first has to implant into the uterine lining before the body even recognizes the pregnancy and begins to manufacture human chorionic gonadotrophin (hcg), the so-called pregnancy hormone. Pregnancy tests work by detecting that hormone. Implantation typically occurs anywhere from about 4-10 days after fertilization; then, the hcg is produced, but it wouldn't be detected immediately. It's recommended that you wait until your period is late before you test, although some sensitive tests out there *may* be yield a positive result as early as 5 days before your period is due. Still, that's iffy, because no matter how sensitive a test is, it can't detect hcg until 1) implantation has occurred and 2) enough hcg has been manufactured. In early stages of pregnancy, hcg levels typically double every 48-72 hours, so waiting just a couple of days can be the difference between a negative and positive result.

I would wait until about 2 weeks after ovulation to test, longer if you can.

You can test 19 days after the day you think you became pregnant.

Sperm can live in a woman's body for up to six days — possibly seven. That's why most pregnancies result from fertilization by sperm that have been waiting in a woman's reproductive tract days before the release of her egg — ovulation — takes place.

Outside the body — where they're not being nourished and protected by a woman's cervical mucus and vaginal secretions, or the warmth and moisture of a man's urethra and reproductive tract — sperm die anywhere between a half an hour to four hours after being ejaculated. If the ejaculate has dried out, or has been wiped or washed off, there are no longer any living sperm to worry about.

Hope this information helps!

My fertility specialist says they usually survive for 3 days, but occasionally survive longer. Use a home pregnancy test on the day your period should start and then again 3 or 4 days later if your period still hasn't started. It won't be accurate before then.

From the articles that I have read, it can remain viable for 72 hours in the body. You will need to get a pregnancy test as soon as you pass the day that you would expect to have gotten your period. You can get an early pregnancy test at your local pharmacy.

Sperm ejaculated into a woman's vagina remain alive in the mucus of the cervix and are able to fertilize an egg for three to five days. Sperm ejaculated outside the body usually live only a few hours.

Sperm can survive up to seven days in the reproductive tract. You can test approximately 14 days after unprotected sex.

No, I think it's only 24-48 hours. Test for pregnancy a couple days before cycle is due.
