I think that the phone number is toll-free (1-866-IDOLS-??) and if I remember correctly, you can also vote online at americanidol.com, but I am not positive about that.

The telephone numbers provided onscreen during the show are free to call.
They are 866 numbers, they are "toll free" meaning you don't pay for the call.
You only pay if you do the text message thing with your cell phone.

I think that's the catch, some cell phone company is making a lot of money off the text messages.
