What, pray tell, is wrong with that last drop if the coffee is good only to that point? Is the last drop tainted in some way and should we leave it in the cup?

Yes, Maxwell House was able to concentrate all the toxic substances in coffee into the last drop and this is a warning required by the Food and Drug Administration before they were allowed to sell the stuff.

It depends, honestly, on how long it takes for you to drink the coffee. If it takes you an hour to drink it, obviously the coffee isn't as good as when you first poured it in your mug! (And if you work in a place like mine, coffee in the pot can stay there for 3-4 hours!)

I always wondered about that myself. Does coffee somehow get worse the deeper it's in the cup? Or the longer it's there? Makes no sense.

Maybe it's because when you get to the last drop, it's cold and not as fresh as when you first started drinking it.
