Not any time soon ...

So far we've seen no verifiable evidence of other sentient species. That said, I believe with some certainty that somewhere in our galaxy at some past, present, or future time, a sentient species did/does/will exist.

Why haven't we heard from them?

Perhaps they are not technologically advanced enough to be heard. They may be mastering stone knives right now, or experiencing their own Rennaisance.

Perhaps they are here right now. Any species sufficiently advanced to travel interstellar distances would be able to hide or masquerade with ease. That Boeing 737 that just flew by may be a surveillance craft.

Perhaps they are so far away they will never notice us and vice versa.

Perhaps they existed a million years ago and died out.

Perhaps they will exist a million years from now.

It is really impossible to know for sure.

The Drake Equation suggests that there is sentient life out there. The Fermi Paradox casts doubt. Play around with the calculation form at the second link and see what you think.

How do you know they aren't here now?

How do you know they haven't already been here? If they have been, how do you know they would be compelled to come back?

How do you know that aliens consider us interesting enough to visit at all?

Man has personally traveled no farther than the moon. Man's creations (voyager) have traveled no farther than the heliosphere.

Why assume that an alien culture capable of interstellar travel would consider humanity to be important at all when by comparison they could very well look at us like we look at:

1 - Ebola virus - avoid at all costs
2 - a zoological exhibit - observe, but don't interfere
3 - a primitive, pagan culture - convert them or give them blankets infested with small pox.

Why assume aliens would hold us in the same high esteem we hold ourselves? I think the answer is hubris - a very human characteristic.

Well, if they're anything like the humans I encounter, I'd say five or ten minutes of kissing, five minutes for a bit of oral, then a few minutes of me slamming into them with the old trouser sword - call it twenty minutes all in?

They said they'd be here in 15 years, but they got kind of lost along the way... They'll be here in about 21 years instead.
