since monday my mate - lets call them A for now - has been acting really unlike their usual self. on monday he was more quiet than usual, and today he was totally silent and not joking about as he usually is. he usually starts talking to me first but today he didn't say a word to me until i started talking to him. so i ask him what's up and he just replies "oh nothing special. just some stuff" but i can tell it's more than "just some stuff" coz i've known him for quite a while now. so i told him he can cry on my shoulder if he ever needs to but just muttered "thanx" really quietly. i really do feel sorry for A coz i've never seen him like this before.
how can i help him feel better without sticking my nose in too far?

it's great that you really show concern for your mate. i'm sure he appreciates your effort.

true, it isn't likely and doesn't seem healthy that your mate is feeling all low and depressed. still, we all experience that once in a while in life. your mate's got his reasons for feeling that way. since he doesn't seem willing to talk about it just yet, it's best that you respect his decisions. usually, your presence and concern would already help him feel better. you could try talking to him about other things to help him lighten up. you could also do him some favors or try convincing him to undertake a certain activity with you. as his friend, i guess you'd know where his interests are.

the thing is, don't push him into telling you stuff he isn't ready to discuss. that often makes it worse. give him time and respect him. he'll come around eventually. you of all people could see that he's going through a pretty rough time. as of now, i guess it's best if you just stick by him and try to understand him. after all, sometimes, all he really needs is a friend who is willing to help.

Try distracting him from his usual stuff. Go out for a movie or dinner with him. Try asking him little, crack silly jokes. Make him feel special.
Come what may, even if he does not talk to you, dont just stop talking because he is having his bad days.

don't keep asking him whats up- he'll yell at u (talking from experience!), but do keep an eye on him, maybe ask his family- some one hes close to, if no one knows and he still wont tell u, try to cheer him up instead, extra trips to the cinema/swimming/footy game etc, he might be feeling a bit lonely so be available but don't suffocate him! hope this helps!

You have done the best one can do in this situation. Time will sought this one out and only your friend will cure what is on his mind. We have all been there one time or another. Sometimes we are our worst enemies and make a situation worse than it is.

Just make sure he knows you are there for him, then he will come to you. If you pressure him then he wont come to you

He doesn't want your help. Leave him alone.
