I just graduated college. I do know what orientation is for.

More important parts of orientation:
- class registration
- enterance loan counseling
- placement testing
- if you live in dorms, housing registration

Less important parts of orientation:
- campus tour
- college life discussions
- meet other students

I also found the orientation to campus resources very helpful such as tutoring programs, student clubs/organizations, academic advising, financial aid, gym, library etc...

It may be boring but it is very important to attend. It is hard to make up the first things I listed if you do not attend orientation.

For more information call your college's 1-800# and ask to speak to the office of student life, they can give you all the info. you need.

I would imagine that they cover some of these points: explaining policies and proceedures, giving you a tour of the campus, allowing you to meet other students, telling you about clubs and organizations, allowing you to sign up for clubs and sports and activities, giving advice about courses to take, making sure that you understand your responsibilities, let you have a little fun before the work begins, etc.

it familiarizes you with the life on campus, academic and administrative affairs, identification cards, keys, dining locations and hours, class times, student events, library regulations, bookstores, housing procedures, use of email (trust me, you do NOT already know how to use your college's email system), a tour of the campus itself, etc.

take my word for it, you want to go to orientation. its informative, its where you'll meet your first college friends, and you will be very glad you did because it is all very overwhelming to just show up on campus the day classes start and have no idea whats happening. you do not want that.
