Generally no. The washer is not a problem. The laundry soap is very effective. If you want some peace of mind, a good large cycle on hot with bleach and that will kill anything. With the dryer you may want to vacuum it out and make sure the lint trap is good and clean. This is more from a fire safety standpoint than anything. Whatever you do DO NOT use flexible vinyl exhaust ducting. This is a fire waiting to happen. I see 2-3 of these fires every month. The clothes that originally went into the dryer had just come from the washing machine and that cleaned them and "sterilised" them. You should be just fine.

No. Clothes come out of the washer clean. They go into the dryer clean.
The first washer and dryer I purchased were used. They worked well.
If you are concerned. Wash some old rags with lots of soap and bleach, and with the hottest water possible. Then run the rinse cycle a few times to get rid of the bleach smell.

For the washer, run through a few cycles with bleach, and soap. For the dryer, thoroughly clean the inside and rinse through the lint trap. For used dryers, belts seem to be the biggest problem (not expensive to fix if you can do it yourself), and with washers, it's the agitator. Go with big name brands - Kenmore (Whirlpool), etc. for best results for used.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the dryer......used to dry clean, newly washed clothes....

but, I would run the washer with the hottest water possible and some disinfecting bleach....throw some white towels in ...and run a full wash...

that should take care of whatever might be in there...

nope, but depending on how much time it has been used i't most likely to break (sooner than a new one)
