The cost of living here in the US has risen quicker than wages(after factoring out the CEOs). I think it's a clever trick. Buying things makes our economy "grow". Credit is heavily sold to the population. Why? So, we can buy more stuff. And the financial companies make more money! Your credit card company can raise your interest rate if you're late on your cable bill! They just raise it, you won't get notice. And no matter how much you make, it will never be enough. In my career in investments, I've seen people make $800,000 a year and it wasn't enough. We have a keeping up with the Jones problem. Get a better house in a better neighborhood, then we need better clothes, a private school for the kids, new vehicles. Think very carefully about what you need.

Back in the fifties they thought we'd soon be working 20 hour weeks with all the advances. Guess what, we work more hours with less vacation every year.

Money is the root of all things in our (capitalist) society for sure. It is very difficult to get by without shelter or food, which require money. The problems come when you cannot generate enough money to follow a lifestyle you cannot afford. If I look objectively at the way we live, everything is about buying this and spending that, ad nauseum. To me the best balance is when you have enough money to make you happy and comfortable, but not constantly stressed because you cannot meet your obligations. It also means being aware of your expectations and aspirations, and achieving an acceptable life.

Because most people won't settle for less than 'everything' they think they're entitled to, so they're in the rat race. Doesn't bother the Amish or the hard core 'live off the land' or commune types, or many rural people living 'simple' lives. People think money is the root of all things, but many people with money seem to be pretty miserable people, it appears to me.

because the cost of living keeps rising and unfortunately, salaries don't keep up.

Money is a necessary evil, because, in wealthy countries like Englan and the US we "need" to have "stuff".

Have you ever traveled abroad? I have, and People dont have DVD collections that rival blockbuster, like we do. They dont have spinning rims, or Cellphones that do everything but place a decent phone call and over 500 CD's. Don't get me wrong...they have nice, (really nice) things, just not in the excess that we do, and they live happily...they are also not as stressed and rushed like we are. I think it's harder to not have money here in the states, and other places too, but we material hogs take the cake.

well with out money you wouldn't be able to get or do a lot of stuff unless someone gives it to you. and sometimes it is the root of all things sometimes it just depends on the situation.

Yes, it's unfortunate but necessary, at least until our technology reaches a point where everyone can attain everything they desire. Until then, there has to be some way to differentiate between those that want to work for their quality of life and those that do not want to work.
