I don't get it -- why did it take searchers 3 days to find Michael Auberry if he was found only 1/2 a mile from the campsite? Yikes...has anyone heard a good explanation for this?

I agree it sounds strange. My opinion, and some will probably be upset with it, is that this boy might have been enjoying the attention, not realizing what a dangerous situation he put himself in. I read this morning that he said he heard the helicopters and the searchers calling his name and he called back but they didn't hear him. I also read that he said he missed his family and was going to hitchhike home. Again, my opinion on that is there was probably a bully in the group that hurt his feelings and he wanted to go home. I know his parents are glad to have him home, but I don't think he is mentally mature enough to take trips away from home without his parents.

I am glad this story had a good ending.

He was a mile and a half away in dense woods, but I don't fully understand it myself.

no good explanation...they should make his parents foot the bill for this though...his friend wasn't camping with him and he was homesick so he decided to walk away
