Less material to make a small car versus a big car. Also, most of your small cars are built for economy and don't have the add-ons that big cars do. You don't buy a throw away car and expect to have heated seats, power everything, tilt steering and premium sound system. If you want items like that you pay for them and you can usually get those type of items in a big car. Your biggest exception would be the high-end rice burners.

It's just a plain joke, once you understand manufacturing techniques.
It doesn't cost but a dime more to stamp one quarter panel, or door skin from another once the tooling is in place.
If we were to integrate the cost of tooling to the point of, idea, coffee, more coffee, flirt with the Secretary rub one out, etc.,
it all goes to raw materials and available machinery.
The fact is not in building the car but in the extras, and how much monies can be made from them.
With modern day manufacturing I would expect to be able to build a 1968 Ford Bronco for less than a modern Honda Fit.
Hell the design is already made, the think groups are already done, the machinery is old by today's standards.
But with the '68 unit you get a speedometer, an ignition switch, a crappy Am radio, wiper, headlights.
Now I get an automatic Kotex remover, satellite navigation, Bose surround sound, and 57 ways to fold my rear seats.
If we strip it down, that old '68 will crush that new Edie Bauer and go for more.
But there is no money to be made off Am radios, and reliability.
The fact beside trinkets and gizmo's, is how fast can we build them?
And larger vehicles are loaded with trinket scrod

easy, people think 4cylinders are cheaper to run and easier to drive, both male and female, making them far more popular than a larger car.
Point in fact: Both my wife and I went looking for later model cars last year, she bought a 96 ford 4cyl with no extras for $5600.
I bought a 97 ford, top of the range, power everything, 6cyl for $3500.
If she ever needs to recon her motor, it would cost more than my 6, it will likely require a rebuild before mine does, as it works twice as hard, she can fit 4 adults uncomfortably, I fit 5 comfortably, hers is uncomfortable to drive and sit in, mine isn't.
she might save 5 or 6 $ when she fills up, big deal.
