i breed my own mealworms and superwoms. mealworms like regullar room temp. around 72 degrees. this stimulates their growth cycle and causes them to change into beatles wich then mated to create more of them. their median is a combo of whole wheat flour, and yellow corn meal I set potatoes on the egg crate parts not on the flour as the flour absorbes the moisture and gets nasty. the colder you keep it the slower there metabolisms will be and you can control the rate of morphing and breeding.
Superworms are a totally different story. if you are interested in them let me know and I will help you out there.
also giant mealworms are not normal they are fed a hormone that inhibits the change into beatles for a longer period of time. so don't be surprised when yours never reach that size. their vision is about 1 foot in front of them is all they pay attentions to. yes they like to hide under egg crates etc. they prefer darker areas over brighter lit areas but as far as preferring darkeness to low lit area not really. their vision is not that great.

When I purchase them at the pet store, they are in a plastic container, not clear plastic, usually white, and that would seem to indicate they do not like too much light. Many beetle larvae are secretive, in part since many other animals find them to be tasty. I think they would like something to hide under, or at least a deep bedding of aspen or other bark to hid in.

I have some that love to burrow down deep in any kind of bedding, sand in this case, also the cold makes their body freeze up and makes them immobile and slows their growth cycle. So they like the warmth.
