Hey... I'm an actress so i might be able to help you. The importance of dialogue in a play is that yu can get a feel of how the characters talk and act. You can hear things easier rather than someoone just reading something and puts no emotion into what they are saying. Dialogue helps create the character in the eyes of an audience. It helps the audience farther engage in the drama. Now, not all dramas need dialogue of course. Many went without it in ancient times. However, in the modern era the audience needs to gain some sort of interaction, and dialogue helps create that.

Most plays, whether naturalistic or stylized, are at least trying to approximate some depiction of life and the way people live. Since we are essentially a verbal race, the way that people TALK to one another is essential to the dramatic art form.
