After the initial enthusiasm for the achievement, the public, and congress, sort of lost interest. It is an expensive undertaking, and the value of returning hadn't been persuasively established in people's minds.
The current plan, however, is to mount future missions to return to the moon.

Why haven't we been back?
a) American astronauts visited the moon on six occasions. A total of 12 American astronauts walked on the moon.
b) The "moon race" was an extension of the cold war. It was mostly about national prestige. America got there first and achieved its primary objective. There was some good science: surveys, measurements, sample collection. But it was mostly about being there first. Having achieved our primary objective, there was no political will to go back. There still isn't. Perhaps, if someone discovers He3 or something else valuable, there will be.

Actually your info isn't entirely correct. There have been numerous manned missions to the moon. Although not recently. At least not since the NASA started using the space shuttle. I imagine money and practicality are factors.
Or perhaps NASA has shifted its focus on other research endeavors.

Firstly It cost ENORMOUSLY to go to the moon.
and secondly there is no real reason to get there again. well may be as a base for going to Mars. but...!
At the time the american went to the moon, it was a race for country's pride which in not a real reason today to get back to the moon.

Have you checked out the hotel prices on the Moon? Outrageous! And the tours are so dull and dusty! I mean, for 0.0001% of the price, you can have a very nice 2-week cruise and tour in Hawaii.

They lost the set... and making a new set would be too conspicuous, so at this very moment they are trying to figure out a way to REALLY put someone on the moon.

It is expensive, dangerous, and there is nothing there to make it worth going.
Besides, public interest wained quickly after we beat the Russians to it, which caused funding to dissapear. The public gets bored easily.
