good luck on your road trip ! alot of places offer free 16 point inspections i suggest you have your vehicle thoroughly inspected before you go on this trip ! brakes - oil & filter - belts - hoses - tune up - tires - brake lines - air filter and so on. the inspection is free but as far as the work they can only replace what you tell them to, any additional work is on them , just write down what you gave them the ok to do and agree on a price prior to the work being performed.

Just do an overall check of the car. make sure the battery is good and check out all the lights to see if they all work. Check wiper blades,and make sure all you guages are working properly. make sure car has been fully serviced. also check your spare tire and jack with a handle. Most important check the belts (fan/alt. a/c power steering ) and all fluid levels which is part of maintenance. Make sure everything works.
