I went on vacation, the day i was due to come there was a snow storm & flights were all canceled
I called my job & spoke to the assistant manager. She said that it was fine that my shift would be coverd & to have a good time. When i got back, i called work & one of my friends told me that i was not on the schedule & she did'nt know why. So i called my manager, who then informed me that i had lost my job due to job abondenment. I told her that i had called. But she said that i did'nt call her. Then one of my friends told me that she had gone to my job & two of the girls that i work with told her that i was fired & never coming back, then started to laugh. When i called to ask why they had no prob. telling a total stranger that i got fired, but could'nt tell me when i called to ask. She said that they did'nt do that. But were did my friend get that i was fired from her bum. I never told her. What should i do. I came back to total mess. I don't even know what happened.

What does your company handbook say? If you are unable to report for work is there a requirement that you call in and speak to someone, then call back and confirm the absence with the manager later on? Some companies require that if you are unable to report for work you must speak with the manager to clarify the problem. It sounds like maybe you need to go in and speak to the manager and assistant manager in person to clarify what happened and why so you'll know for your own sake. If the company policy states that the call-in procedure is to talk to the manager then you don't have much ground to stand on.

As far as the behavior of the two employees goes, that is tacky on their part, and no one should have said anything to them about why you no longer work there. You may have something there on the grounds of privacy, but it'd be pretty hard to prove. (Your friends word versus the two workers and your boss)

Either the assistant manager that you talked to never told your manager that you had called, or she did tell her, but the manager wanted you gone and this was a perfect excuse for it. The best that you can do is to call or go in person and talk to your manager. Stay as calm as you can, explain what happened, and ask if you could have your job back. If you can tell her why you talked to the assistant manager instead of her, that is even better. Don't get angry with her, it won't help you at all. The worst that she can do is tell you no.

Can you go to the manager's boss and explain what happened? It sounds like you at least have a complaint. Does your company have a human resource department? If so, talk to them and explain what happened. Be sure to have the exact date, and if you have it, the time, that you called your boss to tell her the problems of why you couldn't get back.

You will never get the straight story from your old company. My guess is someone didn't like you and they took this chance to fire you.

Go try and get your unemployment - you may have to fight for it since you techinically got fired.

Stop worrying about what happened and why - and focus on getting a new job - this one is gone.

Look forward and good luck.

You know, you can be fired for just about anything these days. If they don't like the way you comb your hair, they can come up with another reason. If you are union, you can ask for a hearing. If you are not, you most likely are out on a limb by yourself. A lot of people don't like unions, but in a case like this, they are worth it.

You need to tell us what state you live in, if it's a "right-to-work" state, bad news.

You may contact me and we'll try to put together a good letter to send to your employer---I am pretty good at this stuff. Hope I can help. Good-luck---Brian

go to the head manager and tell her what happened- if she doesnt give you an explanation make sure you make it clear that everyone will know what a crappy place that is and how bad it is to work there.
