Refurbished means that someone had problems with it in the past and returned it. Then the company sent it back to apple and have them check it out. They usually have them sent out to a third party to have them inspected then they resell them.
I don't know if I would go that route are not. It's according if you can afford a new one or not. I haven't had a Ipod personally but I own about 6 creative brand MP3 players. I bought most of them off Ebay and haven't had a problem with them.
But if I were you I would look for someone with 95% or better positive feedback to buy a used one off of. I'm a seller on Ebay and try to make everyone that buys off me happy and have a 100% feedback.

Good luck with your new purchase

Be weary of the two refurbished products AND electronics offered on eBay. My mom offered a refurbished telephone after her first between the comparable variety broke, and he or she enjoyed her first one- HATED the 2nd. The refurbished one had soooo many problems with it because of the fact it wasn't sort new. additionally, on eBay, you never be attentive to if somebody is mendacity approximately their electronics they're merchandising. they may be broken and not artwork... besides the fact that in the event that they say they do. So in the top, i think i might recommend a clean one from maximum suitable purchase or something... or a used one from a chum which you have have been given examined... wish this helps!
