When I am with my friends, I do fine, but if I am around someone I don't know, I have the tendency to be really quiet and keep to myself. Giving the appearance that I am stuck up. If I get on an elevator I get kind of nervous and a bit sweaty. I know others probably think I am crazy, but I just can't help it. In class, I always sit in the front, so I really don't have an opportunity to make a lot of friends. Most people who sit in the front are more studious and are at college to actually learn, lol. JK. Seriously though, how do I calm myself down. I act perfectly normal around those that I know, but when I am around strangers, people probably percieve me as aloof.

good question. I have the same problem. I think it may be a slight anxiety disorder, but probably not bad enough to medicate....

I recommend reading a book called "The Four Agreements" and perhaps you are nervous because you're unsure of yourself. Ask yourself "Do I trust myself?" If you do there should be no anxiety. Are you looking to outside sources these "people you don't know" to define who you are? Really people don't care what we're doing as they're so involved with themselves and getting what needs to be done done. It's okay to be yourself and to take comfort in that. You're a wonderful, beautiful being with a lot to offer! Stop trying to think for others, and let them think for themselves.

If none of this still helps, and you still get quite anxious in these situations, it may be a good idea to seek a psychologist or someone that you can talk to about these things.

Good luck!

grow up...that's the first thing that comes to mind...you are an individual...do not be afraid to be yourself...if people are offended...oh well...you can live without them...good luck...
