The trilogy, His Dark Materials, by Philip Pulllman. If you like Harry Potter, this is a thousand times more intense. They're actually coming out with a movie of the first book, The Golden Compass, at the end of this year.

One of my favorite authors is Ian McEwan. All of his books take place primarily in England. His last two, which are excellent, are "Atonement" and "Saturday." You might read John Banville's "The Sea," which was awarded the Booker Prize in 2005, maybe 2006, and takes place in England. Of course, you could try anything by Charles Dickens or Thomas Hardy. "Bleak House" is one of my favorite Dickens' novel. And I've always been fond of "The Major of Casterbridge" by Hardy.
If it's women authors you're interested in, read anything by Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, Emma, etc.). Recently, a contemporary American author who lives in England, Lionel Shriver (yes, a woman!), has been getting positive publicity and winning awards for her novels. You might look at her latest, "The Post-Birthday World." See attached link. Good luck and keep reading!

The entire Sherlock Holmes series. Most every Ian Flemming novel (James Bond) has portions in "jolly old" England. Little Women, I believe. Robin Hood. The list probably goes on.
