A proxy is a site that you access which will then access the site you really want to go to.
When companies or network admin block sites, they block the site based off of the IP that the packets are being sent to and received from. However, using a proxy, you are not going to the site that is blocked, but are able to see it THROUGH the other site.
Think of it like a picture-in-picture tv. The network admin is able to monitor the big picture in the tv, but you are able to set the screen so that it also shows you the small internal picture.
Most of the time, these are used to bypass security blocks. A lot of the bigger ones are being locked down by places like schools as they know how people are using them, and trying to prevent the circumvention of policies without just shutting it all off.

A proxy is a website that you go through to access another website when you can't connect directly to it.
Like, let's say you called your friend who has two phones, and they called your mother for you and put the phones up against each other. You could talk to your mother even though you really are calling your friend. That's what a proxy does.
There's a number of reasons to use proxies:
- Anonymity, makes it harder to tell who you are
- Get around website blocks or filters
- Pretend to be a computer user in another country or network
- Let someone else do webpage caching
There are other reasons to use private proxies aside from these, but these are the ones that come to mind for public proxies.

A proxy is a computer out on the Internet that will take your queries (ie web page requests, etc.) and ask them on your behalf.
The result is the web site you want to go to will see the proxy's IP address, not yours.
Internet Explorer allows you to enter a proxy server's IP address and port number.
You basically would want to do this if you are wanting to hide your identity (to some degree) when surfing/browsing the web.

a proxy is someone who does something for you because you can't be there; they stand in for you; i've seen it most often used in the case of voting; if you have shares in a company and they hold a meeting and you can't be there, you can ask for a proxy to vote for you.

proxies are servers that take the content from a web page (other than thie own) and posts it for you to view on their web page.
Whats the point?
They are almost untraceable so you can get to web pags that may be blocked (like at school or work)
