Personally, I would recommend looking into Wicker caskets, as they're more environmentally friendly. The trend toward Green Cemeteries and more natural ways of laying a loved one to rest is growing, and I think that's a good thing for the earth.

Try searching www.dogpile.com using the keywords Green Cemetery, or environmentally friendly casket, or wicker casket and check out the results!

In terms of durability, copper and bronze are the most durable and are more resistant to rust and corrosion, but they are also the most expensive. Stainless steels are also good, heavyweight caskets with resistancy to rust and corrosion, a little more moderately priced. A 16 gauge steel is the heaviest weight steel (non-stainless) casket. They are priced just below a stainless. Down from a 16 gauge would be an 18 or 20 gauge casket, medium and lightweight steel, respectively, as well as in price, medium to least expensive. Any of the better caskets, such as 18 gauge, 16 gauge, stainless, copper and bronze offer what is called a gasket. It is a protective seal that is meant to keep outside elements from entering the casket. This feature is very important to some, and very unimportant to others, it is all a matter of personal preference. Hope this helps!

As far as for protection of the remains from the elements......Id purchase a Cloth covered casket cheapest they have.....and place it into a quality burial vault.

The funeral home makes the most off the casket when all you really need is a quality burial vault.......as long as the burial is done properly.... casket placed in vault bottom..and bottom brought up to lid to insure quality seal (Dirt free) you just got the best protection for the money.
