I've been playing the guitar for 4 years now. Well let's get started. I wouldn't get links from people and learn to play from the internet because usually the methods are difficult and you can end up getting frustrated with the guitar. Find a local place somewhere in town that you can take lessons from. If you don't like it after about a month, find another place, or call someone to give you private lessons.
To take lessons you may need to buy a guitar, or the teacher will let you use a guitar, or you may have to rent a guitar.
To rent a guitar, just go to a local guitar store and they'll help you find what you need.
If you're buying a guitar then I would reccomend these brands:Gibson, Fender, Yamaha and Taylor. You need to find the right size that will suit you. You should easily be able to get your fingers around the guitar. Price of guitar is important to think about. For starters I would not buy anything over $350. But don't go to cheap or your guitar may not sound good or could easily break. I would reccomend buying something around the $300 range to get a long-lasting a great sounding guitar. It will be worth it. When your starting to play guitar, a good choice would be to start out with an acoustic guitar because it's simpller to play and easier to learn on than an electric. An acoustic guitar is a guitar that you don't have to plug into an amp or speaker to work. It looks like this: http://www.stevesmusiccenter.com/GuildD40RichieHavensBig.jpg
After you learn how to play notes (Chords and Tabs) go to one of my favourite websites at www.ultimate-guitar.com. There you can find the notes to play all of your favourite songs and show off to your friends and family.
By the way...guitar is not a boy's sport. Many, many, many great female guitar players out there. And maybe you'll become one yourself. I hope this answer has helped you and that you stay interested in guitar playing.
P.S. I starred your question because I think it's important for you and many people to learn how to play guitar. It's a wonderful art.

a "boy sport"?? first thing, it isn't a SPORT.. second, last I checked it was an instrument and anyone, regardless of age race or gender, can learn to play it.
First thing you need is to purchase a guitar, you will most likely want to start out on a accoustic guitar. Also, you should purchase a level 1 guitar book.. or find "The Guitar Super Book" which is a rally good one for starting out. You will need to learn everything from how to play it down to how to change/tune the strings, you will probably need to purchase an electric tuner also.
Hope that helps! any questions just email me! =)

I also wanted to play guitar and was looking for cheap lessons..i asked my band teacher at school if he knew of anyone and it turned out he played guitar and he ended up giving me lessons for free..i don't know if u know the band teacher at ur school(if ur still in school) but they might be able to help you. Also if you buy a cheap beginners guitar book it isn't very hard to teach yourself the basics if u have a good book with illustrations. Good luck!

Musiciansfriend.com for the guitar they have some really good intro-models for very little. you like a song go to google insert the song name & chords there will be a huge list of songs & chord charts, some sites have graphs showing how to play the chords, some have tablatures & explanations & online lessons. As far as lessons, check colleges (students need money & many play) & music stores in you areas.
Good luck.

Start off with a beginer guitar book, then a medium guitar book ect. after all of that you should have a lot of guitar experience. then type in the song name of a song you like at www.ultimate-guitar.com. I've been playing for four years with barely any lesons and I can play stuff like wolfmother, but if you get the chance GET LESONS they help a lot more than you think.

Your mom thinks music is a sport?? Hm, don't know what to say on that one. You should check out gregslist.com for a cheap used guitar and then I left some links in the following citation space for you to check out.

A "BOY sport"?? Man, no offense, but your mom has to realize it's the 21st century.
Get yourself a decent cheap acoustic (Yamaha or Fender) & just get a chord book for starters.
You can do it.
