because it's about comedy raising money for charities and red noses are a symbol of comedy is my theory (i've never found clowns funny though - think they're a bit scary!) x

beacuse it was comical and easy to remember. Now you can have red ears or t-shirts or anything else really. It was easy, cheap and people recognise (in the uk) what it represents.
