The 2 major political parties are like parents.
The democrats are like one's mother. Always the one who kissed boo-boos, tells you it will be alright, is nice to the neighbors, keeps things tidy around the house, says things like "wait until your father gets home", "well, lets see how can we fix this", and "nobody should do my kid wrong".
The republicans are like one's dad. Football, motorcycles, racing...hates the neighbors, but is nice because the wife will gripe, tells you to suck it up when you get a boo-boo, handles the bully down the street, goes to work at a job he hates, fixes things around the house, and is generally grumpy when it comes to your mom. Says things like "I don't care; ask your mother". "knock off all that noise", "stop whining" and "what did you do to deserve it"

There are several differences, although for the sake of explanation I will substitute conservative and liberal in the explanation because although there are often exceptions, most republicans tend to be conservative, and most democrats tend to be liberal.
Conservatives believe that should people succeed based upon their abilities and effort. Liberals believe that government should equalize everyone to a similar standard.
Conservatives believe that this country although having flaws is based on a proper values and noble in its beliefs. Liberals believe that times have progressed to the point that our country requires a major overhaul in policies regarding values be more accepting of alternative values and include them in society.
Conservatives believe that the life of the unborn should receive the same rights as those who are alive. Liberals believe that it is the right of a woman to choose to abort an unborn baby for any reason.
Conservatives believe that our country should be willing to confront terrorist on foreign battlefields, stopping them though force when necessary to ensure peace. Liberals believe that we should isolate ourselves from these areas, and believe that appeasement is the best route to peace.

The main difference, although not much in foce now, is the Republicans value individualism and smaller government and the Democrats want a large nanny nation.

Republicans believe in less Taxes. And States make their own Mind according the the people who live in that State. Democrats want higher Taxes, to control what, when how and how much? They decide for you need to keep.

Republicans believe in working to get where you are in the world without government interference, the Democrats believe in taking what the republicans have worked for and give it to those that don't work or don't want to work and give it to them and they want government sticking their nose in your business day in and day out! Short but to the poiunt!~

Democrats are all extremely liberal enemies of the U.S. Conservatives see persons as needless to say unfastened and notice government's place as keeping their rights. Republicans incorporate every physique from very conservative to very liberal, as long as you do not brazenly hate usa. Liberals see persons as belongings and notice government's place as controlling them. A liberal who does not hate usa is declared as a "neocon."

Not a whole lot of difference there. To paraphrase the great Bill Hicks, the Dems are the puppet on the left. The Repubs are the puppets on the right......but then you realise.....with horror......THERE'S ONE GUY HOLDING BOTH PUPPETS....
(and sadly, the 'guy' in the metaphor is not intended to refer to the American people)!

The Democrats talk like socialists and spend like drunken sailors; the Republicans talk like Libertarians and spend like drunken sailors (no offense to any drunken sailors out there).
So, no there, in reality is scant difference twixt the two. It is more like there is one large party with a small range of options to choose from.

Republicans have no ideas and no ology.
Republicans believe in more taxes, but lie about it to get elected.
Republicans want more government instead of better government, but lie about it to get elected.
Democrats are good, honest patriotic Americans.
