From Wikihow:

How to Spin a Drumstick

Steps:

1. Place the stick in your hand with the bead out in a "ready to play" type position. Roll your hand clockwise to where your thumb is on top of the stick. At this point, all of the pressure should be applied between the thumb and index finger.

2. In a quick flicking motion, bring your thumb in and move your index finger up while moving your entire hand up, causing the stick to spin. Be sure to keep the stick spinning straight vertically or else it can move side to side.

3. To catch the stick, simply put your hand out with your palm up and catch the part of the stick that spins close to you.

Tips:

1. Don't let the drumstick get too big on one side because you will lose it.

2. The drumstick has to be about the same length on both sides of your fingers.

3. If you get good at this method try spinning it between two other (adjacent) fingers. With practice you can eventually transfer which fingers you spin with without stopping.

4. When catching it, be sure to keep your hand relatively flat or else the stick can strike the fingertips, causing pain...

The way I learned was by watching Tommy Lee do it. Hold the drumstick between your index and middle finger and the middle joint. Then it's basically a motion between the 2 fingers...rolling it. Give it a whirl! **pun intended**
