My spouse is s college professor and believe me, college professors have heard all the excuses you can come up with. Just email the essay and don't say why you were not there. He/she already knows why you didn't show up.

professors went through at least 10 years of college level school. they're not idiots and they resent being treated as such by kids and their dumb "my dog ate my homework' excuses. be an adult and just say that you didn't finish your essay on time.
also, you don't need an excuse. you need to start taking accountability for your actions.

Well I am a professor. Just send a very short, polite, correctly spelled e-mail saying you are sorry you are not in class but you are submitting your paper. Then say thank you.

Say you forgot what day it was and thought it was spring break. You spent all night last night drinking and when you finally awoke you had the worst hangover you've ever had. You didn't go to class because you didn't want to vomit on anyone.

You should tell him the truth, or else you will hold the lie on your back for a while, and then if he finds out (which is common), you will be in serious trouble.
