i have a 93 vehicle and the little bit of body behind the back door and in front of the back tire has fallen off due to rust.seein as it is a pretty big hole to fill, what can i start out with to plug the hole so i can start bondo'ing to paint? is bondo gonna hold up or eventually fall off again, and is there a better option that will last longer?

As was said, you will want to use sheet metal to cover the hole. All the body work that I've done (not like it's been a lot! but i've done some), I've always used fiberglass... much preferred over Bondo which will just rust out again anyway. Not saying fiberglass won't but I still prefer it (mostly because bondo looks awful and brings your resale value way down).

Have you ever repaired a hole in drywall? Well, same concept. Find some flat metal (some use coil stock ) cut it to fit into the hole and make as flat behind the hole as possible then rivet to the body. Then drill holes in the coil stock for the bondo to stick to. Have fun.

You can buy metal patch panels that match your missing metal. You fasten those to your existing metal by welding, using sheet metal screws, or pop rivets. In a few cases, you can glue them on with adhesive like FUSOR brand. Once that is in place, you use body filler (Bondo) to smooth the seam. Those panels are pretty inexpensive. If you don't have a local supplier, you can buy them at places like rustrepair.com or abpanels.com
